How well do you actually know your family?
You know Grandma.
Sure.
But do you know what she wanted to be when she grew up?
What her mother was like?
Who her best friend was?
Why she chose her career?
What scared her when she became a parent?
What she gave up?
What she wishes she did differently?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
That is why questions matter.
You do not need to sit somebody down with 100 interview questions.
Ask one thing you genuinely want to know.
"What were you like when you were my age?"
Then listen.
Ask about the WHY.
You might know Dad moved in 1988.
Why?
You might know Grandma became a nurse.
Why?
You might know your parents bought that house.
Why that house?
Why then?
What was going on?
Don't just preserve what your family doesn't know. Get the context and reasoning behind those pivotal decisions.
You will think of more later.
